Martial Arts are not just for self defense but can be a fantastic way to work out.

"Use Martial Arts As A Great Way To Workout"

Martial arts literally means "war skills". As language has changed over time so the term martial arts has come to mean different things. If you were to ask someone what they understood the word "art" to mean the answer of skill would probably be a long time coming.!

When the term the martial arts came into being it simply meant skills that are used in warfare. Basically that is how we perceive martial arts today and this is evidenced in the difference in the Jutsu and Do systems of martial arts. Jutsu means art, practise and skill whereas Do is all about principle and the philosophies behind martial arts.

Martial arts covers a wide area of sport and there are over 1000 styles in over 25 different countries so you are bound to find one that suits you!

The history of martial arts as a sport is a long one. Soldiers and warriors displayed combative skills designed not to result in death and took part in the original Olympic games!

Many people view martial arts with the same eyes they watch high-kicking, fast moving films. This may not be the case when you actually take up training! Training for competition may not equip you well to primarily defend yourself in a street fight. In a competition for example there are rules eg. no biting. Street fighting doesn't adhere to rules!

The training involved is however great for fitness, fun, bit of self-defense and for agility and muscle tone. It is excellent for all-round fitness!
